Catastrophic events in nature occur out of our control. What we live with is their aftermath. We live with physical destruction, physical loss, personal loss, collapse of the community's economic engine; and, we live with the paralyzing weight of personal trauma. Physical destruction and physical loss can be mitigated; and, in some cases completely avoided. Personal loss is largely within our control. A community economy need not collapse if the community remains intact. Personal trauma can be managed with training.

Smart Home Alabama - Helping Communities Build Safer, Smarter and Stronger

The seed of Smart Home Alabama was the desire to alleviate the suffering that resulted from the collapse of the residential insurance market on the Gulf Coast following Ivan and Katrina. As that seed began to grow, Smart Home became acutely aware of the bigger picture and the fact that the means to create stronger more resilient communities exists but awareness of them does not. You cannot effectively act if you do not know what to do.
The Smart Home means are education, facilitation, collaboration and partnership. Education is aimed at providing all community participants from both the private and public sectors with knowledge impacting catastrophe mitigation and avoidance. Through facilitation Smart Home will provide a forum for all stakeholders to meet, share and be heard. Collaboration means bringing diverse groups together to work on community projects. Partnerships are how the limited resources of individual groups are combined for maximum impact.

Every member of every segment of the community must be an active participant in community recovery and community readiness. Getting ready will, in large part, affect the recovery.

This website will be a major conduit for information related to Smart Home for major activities. Please visit often to stay abreast of developments in your community. Smart Home belongs to the communities in which it operates. As the website matures we will seek to include more and more community specific items of interest.
